The Bruins entered this contest ranked number one in the country, with an 8-0 record. They defeated the Beavers at Gill Coliseum by a score of 78-72. Led by sophomore center Bill Walton, UCLA went undefeated on the year and concluded the season with a national championship victory over Florida State.
